Axetris introduced new reflector design for its miniaturized EMIRS50 infrared emitter

Axetris Reflector for EMIRS50

New reflector design offers up to 10 times more optical power.

Axetris’ MEMS-based thermal Infrared sources combine two-dimensional emission with high mechanical stability and high efficiency. The MEMS design offers high modulation depth at high frequencies due to the extremely low mass of the thin membrane. The high emissivity over the complete spectral range from 2 – 14 µm enables measurement of the complete variety of gases in the IR range.

Besides the optimized design of the Axetris IR sources, optical design efficiency is probably the biggest contributing factor towards developing a competitive NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared Spectroscopy) gas detection module. Towards this end, Axetris has developed the new reflector design (Reflector 6 in the Axetris IRS Portfolio) for use with the new miniature IR source EMIRS50. The new reflector design enables maximum optimization of available emitted power to design highly-sensitive gas detection modules. Simulations and real measurements have proved that the Reflector 6 can help customers gain optical power at the detector by up to a factor of 10! (See simulation figure)

The reflector surface specifications have been vastly improved using a new cost-effective manufacturing process. With the introduction of Reflector 6, Axetris infrared sources can further guarantee an optimal performance and long term stability for gas sensor design.

To help our customers achieve higher optical performance and optimize the optical interface (which translates into higher gas sensor performance), the Axetris optical support team supports our customers by undertaking optical simulations using tools such as Zemax. As a result, we can suggest concrete improvements, e.g. customized reflectors, absorption tube layouts, etc.
