Leister – an international company, right on my doorstep

Irina Bucher

Apprentice Irina Bucher started her commercial apprenticeship at the Leister Group in February 2019. In the following interview, she reveals how it all came about, what she likes about her apprenticeship and what a typical day at Leister is like for her.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship with the Leister Group?

Because I live in Obwalden, I was naturally familiar with Leister. I am completing my apprenticeship in business administration in English, so my focus is naturally on that language. That’s why I was looking for a company with an international operation in which I can use and improve my English on a daily basis. Leister was there at just the right time – an international company, right on my doorstep.

I sent my application – including a curriculum vitae, application letter and certificates – to Erika Windlin, Head of Training at Leister AG. I quickly received a reply and, to my delight, it the one I was hoping for. I was first invited to visit have a look around and then for a job interview. I am glad that everything worked out and that I was able to start my apprenticeship at Leister in February 2019, because it was something I really wanted to do.

Why have you chosen to focus on English?

I am completing my training in «Kauffrau Business Englisch» (business administration in English) at FREI'S Schulen Luzern and as part of this training I did an internship at a London charity organization. There I learned to speak English fluently and to write English correspondence within seven months. Of course, I would like to apply what I have learned, which is what I need to do as part of my training.

What is a normal day look like in your apprenticeship?

Because my apprenticeship means that I do not always work in the same department or area, my tasks vary. I usually get to the office early in the morning and first boot up my computer; then I complete everything that was left over from the day before. After that, I check whether I have received any new assignments, e.g. via e-mail. I usually coordinate briefly with my trainer early in the morning. We discuss what is due that day and what tasks are assigned to me. After that, I can do my work on my own.

I really appreciate being given responsibility even though I am still in training. This gives me the opportunity to play an active role and to really be an asset to the company. Of course, I can always ask my co-workers if I am unsure about anything.

What do you think of the stereotypes commonly held about business administration training, like sitting around and drinking coffee all day long and twiddling your thumbs?

(laughs) I don't even like coffee, but these stereotypes are not true anyway. I'm very lucky that my training is very varied and doesn’t give me time to twiddle my thumbs. There is always something to do here. Some days I completely lose track of time and am surprised when noon comes around or it is soon time to go home.

Do you have any tips for student beginning the process of choosing a career?

I think it is helpful to visit as many companies as possible. This is the best way to find out which profession you like.

During my first interview I was very nervous. I'm sure most people are. It helps if you prepare well in advance and learn about the company and the apprenticeship. And during the job interview, it's best to be authentic. So don't pretend, just be yourself and ask questions if you don't understand something. Then you'll be fine.

Do you already have plans for when you complete the apprenticeship?

Yes, after hopefully passing my final exams, I will study full-time for a vocational baccalaureate (Abitur in Germany) in August 2020 with a focus on health and social issues. I don’t know yet what I’ll do after that – whether I’ll study or get a job. That remains to be seen.

Thanks for the interesting conversation and the insight into your apprenticeship.

Irina Bucher wrote this interview herself as part of her training at Leister while working temporarily in the marketing and communications department. Silke Landtwing, Manager Corporate Communications, chaperoned her during her stay.

We think Irina has done an excellent job with this interview and we thank her very much for letting us publish it. We wish her continued success with her apprenticeship.
