LEISTER AND THE PROCESS HEAT INDUSTRY
In the process industry, there are many cases where it is necessary to heat certain elements at specific points. Convection heating requires an intermediate fluid between the heat source and the object to be heated: in the case of Leister heaters and blowers, this is air, a clean medium, which does not require complex disposal, does not deposit dust (which tends to remove) and generally does not alter the characteristics of the treated product. Hot air heating is an efficient and cost-effective solution for most applications in the process industry. In these cases heating by radiation can be useful: the heat coming from the source is transmitted directly to the object to be heated without any intermediation. Radiation can be reflected, pass through the object or be absorbed, depending on the wavelength; by calibrating the wavelength, it is possible to obtain optimal absorption of the thermal energy by the object being processed, by heating it efficiently and rapidly. It is also possible to heat the individual components of a composite element with different intensities, thanks to the different absorption characteristics of the radiation by the different materials.
THE ACQUISITION OF KRELUS
The range of solutions offered by Leister is now extended to include infrared heating thanks to the acquisition of Krelus, a Swiss specialist in this particular technology. For more than 40 years, Krelus has been offering high-performance infrared heaters based on innovative technology. The radiant energy passes directly from the heating element, consisting of a thin sheet of metal material, to the product, without the use of glass, quartz or ceramics as a means of heat transmission. Efficiency is guaranteed by special insulation systems that drastically reduce heat loss from the back to the heating systems.
The radiations emitted by Krelus heaters is in the medium wave range (± 3.0 µm), which is very well absorbed by elements such as paper, fabrics and thermoplastics. This allows considerable heating efficiency and precision. In addition, Krelus systems have a very short warm-up time, which allows them to be frequently switched off and on again, by following the needs of the process, thus allowing intelligent use of energy. The other important benefit of the system's very low thermal inertia is safety: in the event of process interruptions, the heating elements are immediately switched off and, as a result, the risks of overheating are eliminated.
